Why Pluto is not a planet?

Updated: Dec 4, 2023

Hello.

How can a body be called a planet?

Pluto was discovered on February 13, 1930 by an astronomer

Clyde Tombaugh

Because it was a new planet, people from all over the world were asked to give it a name.

Meanwhile, an 11-year-old British girl suggested the name "Pluto" and it was adopted.

For 76 years, Pluto was called the smallest planet in the solar system.

But on 24 August 2006, a joint meeting of the Astronomical Union was held.

In this joint meeting, the planets had to be defined in an international manner.

So in this international meeting,

three conditions were laid down to give any body the status of a planet,

1...

It will revolve around the sun.

2...

Its mass should be such that it is spherical due to gravity.

3...

Its orbit around sun should be clear,

That is, it must have an orbit around sun, and it donot enter in any planet orbit, but ploto did not hav

e a clear orbit, it enters in another planet orbit that's why it was removed from Planets list.

Pluto fulfilled the first two conditions, but the third condition removed it from the list of planets.
